Περιγραφή
The stone bridges of Grevena are the largest and most impressive in all of Macedonia. In 1995, following actions by the Prefecture of Grevena, the 11th Ephorate of Byzantine Monuments of Veria declared the bridges of the prefecture to be listed monuments. Their style is generally the same.
The only exception is the bridge under the Nidrouzi mountain, between the villages of Alatopetra and Prosvoro. This bridge had a special size of stones with perfect carving and placement. Important for the size of its arch (the largest in Macedonia) is the bridge of Aziz-Aga, which was built in 1727 and is 70m long and 15m high.
For communication purposes, an important bridge was the bridge of Spanos that connected Epirus with Macedonia. It is 84m long and 10m high and is the largest in the prefecture.
An impressive bridge and visited by many people every year is that of Portitsa, which is built at the roots of the gorge outside the village of Spilaio.
The two-arch bridge of Ziakas, next to the new bridge that leads to the homonymous village, was built at the end of the 19th century on the Velonia River.
Difficult to access, especially in autumn and winter, is the bridge of Kagelias, next to the road that connects Trikomo with Monahiti.
A special bridge due to its location is that of Pramoritsa with a length of 42m. The only bridge in the prefecture that is built inside a village is that of Dotsikos. Between the villages of Kastro and Megaro is the single-arch bridge of Kastro built over the Grevenitis River, which forms a perfect semicircle 8m high.
There are seven other smaller and newer stone bridges in the prefecture plus the half-ruined bridge of Pasha, which has a similar tradition to that of Arta. The bridge was demolished in 1941 by the British in order to stop the advance of German troops.
