Περιγραφή
Between the National Park “Valia Kalda” and the Vasilitsa Ski Resort are some of the most beautiful villages of the Grevena prefecture. Avdella, where the first filmmakers of the Balkans (the Manakia brothers) came from, and Perivoli are two of the most important summer resorts of the Grevena prefecture. Although in winter these villages do not have many permanent residents, every summer they fill with people and host many livestock farmers with their herds.
Samarina and Smixi, famous Vlach villages, Filippeoi, Aetia, Lavda, Dotsiko and Mesolouri are among the villages of Grevena that receive a multitude of tourists during the winter due to their close distance to the Vasilitsa Ski Resort. Several of these villages are also famous for their traditional festivals during the summer months and especially on the day of August 15th.
A village of exceptional natural beauty is Spilaio, which is built at the foot of Mount Stavros and is one of the oldest settlements in Western Macedonia. Another well-known village is Ziakas, built at an altitude of 900 m. with a wonderful view of Orliakas. The famous chieftain Theodoros Ziakas came from Ziakas, from whom the village took its name.
Kalloni, Megaro and Kalirachi are three other very picturesque villages reminiscent of the artisan villages of Epirus, while in the southwestern part of the prefecture, Kipourio, Monahiti, Krania, and the isolated Mikrolivado with its alpine landscape are distinguished for their enchanting natural environment and rich flora and fauna.
Less picturesque but with more life throughout the year are the villages located on the northern side of the prefecture. Sirini, Amygdalies, Elefthero, Agios Georgios, Kivotos, Vatolakkos, Myrsina and Taxiarchis are some of these villages with several permanent residents,
On the eastern side of the village, there are several villages, such as Poros and Knidis, which suffered major damage during the 1995 earthquake. As a result of the destruction, most of the villages have been rebuilt. Thus, these villages may have lost a little of their picturesqueness, but they have not lost the beauty of their natural landscape. Thus, Knidis, Itea, Nisi, Agaleoi and their nearby villages, built on the banks of Aliakmonas, have a rich natural environment. In the same area are Sarakina and Paleochori, two of the largest villages of the prefecture during the Ottoman period.
Other beautiful villages of the prefecture are Trikomo or Zalovo which was created by the union of three settlements, Kosmati, Emilianos, as well as the remaining villages in the southern and southeastern part of the prefecture, which are more lowland. The most famous village in the area is Karpero, while the town of Deskati is also particularly well known, which is quite picturesque and constitutes an autonomous administrative, social, cultural and commercial center.
